The Big Five / OCEAN model

What is the Big Five?

The Big Five (or OCEAN model) is the most scientifically validated personality model to date. It has been used since the 1980s in personality psychology and is the subject of thousands of studies worldwide.

It describes personality along 5 independent dimensions:

Letter Dimension Characteristic
O Openness Curiosity, creativity, taste for novelty
C Conscientiousness Rigor, organization, reliability
E Extraversion Sociability, assertiveness, social energy
A Agreeableness Cooperation, empathy, altruism
N Neuroticism Emotional sensitivity, tendency toward stress

Why the Big Five rather than the MBTI?

The MBTI is popular but not scientifically validated: its binary categories (I/E, T/F, etc.) lack test-retest reliability and its theoretical foundations are contested.

The Big Five has properties the MBTI lacks: - Stability over time - Predictive validity (performance, job satisfaction) - Cross-cultural replication across dozens of countries

FitRadarHR never uses the MBTI

In line with its founding principles, FitRadarHR only uses scientifically validated instruments. The MBTI is not one of them.

The IPIP questionnaire

FitRadarHR uses the IPIP questionnaire (International Personality Item Pool), developed by Lewis Goldberg and placed in the public domain. It is freely usable, including commercially.

  • 50-item version: high correlation with commercial instruments (NEO-PI-R)
  • 100-item version: increased precision, recommended for internal mobility

Questionnaire languages

The questionnaire is available in French, English, German and Spanish. The scientific rigor of each translation is not, however, identical:

Language Official IPIP coverage Source
🇫🇷 French Professional adaptation of the 100 items
🇬🇧 English 100/100 — original version Goldberg (1992)
🇩🇪 German 100/100 — official translation validated by back-translation Streib & Wiedmaier (2001), Universität Bielefeld
🇪🇸 Spanish 50/100 official — the 50 extension items are translated in-house de Oliveira, Cherubini & Oliver (2013), ACM TOCHI

Limitation on the long Spanish version (100 items)

For the short version (50 items), all 50 Spanish items come from an official translation published by IPIP. For the long version (100 items), half of the Spanish items (the ones extending the questionnaire from 50 to 100 items) have no published official translation: they were translated by the FitRadarHR team, in a register consistent with the rest of the questionnaire, but without independent psychometric validation (no reliability study or factor analysis dedicated to this translation). If you use the 100-item Spanish version in a high-stakes context, take this limitation into account. Full detail of the translation methodology in docs/product/translations-ipip.md (code repository).
